A GRADUATE STUDENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM UNY COMPETED IN A TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT PON 2020 PAPUA

A graduate student of physical education program of 2020, Afrizal Ivanisevic, competed in the 20th National Games (PON) in Papua 2021, representing South Sumatra Province. Afrizal Ivanisevic, known as Ivan, participated in the competition after completing the pre-PON in Palembang 2019. Ivan won 4 tickets after beating Yogyakarta, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Jambi, and East Nusa Tenggara provinces. Blood, sweat and tears were poured while preparing for the competition.

Ivan committed himself to rigorous training and matches. He had to practice for six hours a day for six months. There were several types of training he had to do including physical training, practice playing, and tactical training. Ivan also underwent a one-month centralized training at Jakabaring Sport Center Palembang prior to PON Papua together with other tennis team members representing South Sumatra province. He was trained to maintain physical fitness and a healthy diet before competing.

In this biggest sporting event in Indonesia, Ivan competed in both the men's doubles and mixed doubles. In the preliminary round, the South Sumatran doubles lost to the host team and Bengkulu doubles where one of the national team players played. In the other team event, Ivan teamed up with Dimas Risky, but they lost to Central Java's team in which ex-players of the national team, Sunu/Prima, played. Despite winning no medals, Ivan was satisfied with the valuable experience participating in the 20th PON in Papua.

In addition to getting the experience competing with the national team players, Ivan also received supports, appreciation, and coaching from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. Ivan hopes that he can participate and win the 21st PON to be held in Aceh in 2024. The tennis match was held in Jayapura city, at Jayapura Mayor Tennis Court to be specific. Tennis match was held ahead of schedule, beginning from September 26 to October 7, 2021. The 20th PON Papua was initially planned to take place in October 2020, but it was postponed until 2021 due to the unending Covid-19 pandemic.
